A. — Qui est relatif, qui est propre au zénith. Point zénithal. Le meilleur instrument d'analyse d'un terroir est la carte à grande échelle (50 000e, mieux 20 000e), le plan cadastral, mais quand on est initié à la lecture des assemblages de photographies aériennes zénithales, on y trouve une image encore plus totale de la réalité locale (Traité sociol., 1967, p. 257).
♦ Distance zénithale. Angle d'une direction avec la verticale. V. géocentrique B ex. de Poincaré. Distance zénithale d'une étoile. ,,Angle que fait le rayon visuel allant de l'œil de l'observateur à l'étoile avec la verticale du lieu`` (Lar. encyclop.). Pendant longtemps on n'a pas apporté un soin suffisant aux corrections d'absorption atmosphérique. Variable avec la longueur d'onde, la distance zénithale des étoiles et le lieu d'observation, l'absorption montre encore des changements importants d'une nuit à l'autre et parfois d'une heure à l'autre (Hist. gén. sc., t. 3, vol. 2, 1964, p. 542).

— ARCHIT. Éclairage zénithal. Éclairage naturel venant du haut (par verrières, lanternons...). Si (...) l'éclairage zénithal offre de réels avantages, en particulier dans la présentation des tableaux, il n'est pas dépourvu d'inconvénients auxquels il faut encore ajouter l'inconfort du visiteur fatigué par une clarté trop vive (Musées Fr., 1950, p. 22).
B. — Qui est situé au zénith. Étoiles zénithales. Si l'ingénieur eût été là, près de ses compagnons, il aurait pu remarquer que ces étoiles n'étaient plus celles de l'hémisphère boréal. En effet, la polaire n'apparaissait pas sur ce nouvel horizon, les constellations zénithales n'étaient plus celles qu'il avait l'habitude d'observer dans la partie nord du nouveau continent (VERNE, Île myst., 1874, p. 21).
